Lexington Recap

Second time for DMP to be at Lexington. If you were there last year you will remember the weather was in charge and we only worked with what we were given. This year was a great, Things only improve when you do things more and more and the cream will rise at the end. Looking forward to working with the Rockbridge Farm Bureau and making this event even smoother each time.

Some added classes to the list sent the hooks up to ninety. The biggest class of pullers were the street diesel pickups. They sure love pulling them.

The night started out with the 6200 Old School trucks that were somewhere around 14 hooks, I think.

Next was the 8050 RWB diesel points class. Jevon with the win with his Dodge and a look-a-like Dodge of Justin Holdren was second. Jason Lambert on the Crazy Talk was third. 11 total in the class with the points leader John Kuykendall in the sixth spot.

This being the Jim Weaver Memorial pull, it was fitting to have the 10,000 Super Pro Farm. This class did not pull last year due to scheduling. A show of six tractors was a little short but put on a good show. Rookie puller Bill Catlett, laid down a great run. Right off the line with the front end just perfect all the way down the track. Pulling a distance of 318.73. Running a 320 full pull distance, I was thinking there might be a two tractor pull off. Both Chad and E L have constantly placed in the top three on any given night. E L's hook came to a surprise when it did not seem to clear up in the rpm department. It looked to me that it might be burnt piston by the blowby coming out of the vent tube. If so, it will be a late night every night this week to be ready for Fredericksburg. Chad's run pulled him to the right side of the track past the 200 foot mark where the track was not the best. Later talking to Bill, he quote was" a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while", Bill this might be true, but I feel we have not seen the last of this tractor in the winners circle.

The 6200 National trucks kept the first timer in the winners bracket. Hope Neese on the High Maintenance with a win. I know this truck eat up some parts in Lynchburg and this was the first hook after the repairs were made. Holding back on the throttle just long enough to feel the tires hook and then came with it. If you were to wonder why or what helped Hope, take a look at the rear tires. The taller cleat might have helped. The track was not picture perfect, but what track is. You can not build a track that works great for a small tire or a big tire. It is all in the feel on the seat. Track after track, you will see this. Having the right tires and right gear is all a guessing game. Wyatt placing second still claims the lead in the points. Leroy Cubbage on the Silver Bullet having not a good run. Something in the new power plant going south and placed 5th. Both trucks out of the Team Cubbage having engine problems.

Keeping it going was the 7800 Light Pro Stock tractors. Two in a row wins goes to Team Cox with Barbee in the seat. I was wondering what to get this team and I have the perfect thing. Sorry you will have to wait till the banquet to find out. Ricky Tavenner placing a second for the second time on the hook. Sharp looking Case/IH placing back to back seconds. Little Boy Blue, Adam Collier placing a third for the night. Adam was the first hook and pulled a 293.81 and turned it down. Later coming back with a 294.31 to become third. Paul Schrock having not a good hook but still holds on to the lead in the points. 40 point lead over the Demo Deere. New to the seat was Chris Morris on the Martin's IH 966. Not so bad run for the first time. Working the brake to help with the tire hookup placed Chris fourth. Ragan in the seat of the Empty Pockets to be fifth and Steve Flint still trying to overcome mechanical problems with his tractor.

In the 12 Hot Farm were four in the pull off. First time winner was Doug Layman on the John Deere. This tractor with two good runs being first. Jason Housden placing second and Billy Rice third and Daniel Burner rounding out the top four. Four out of the top five in points in a pull off. 10 total in the class. Nothing changes in the points for the top three. Billy, Jason and Daniel. The John Deere of Team Riley/Layman to be fourth.

A shout out to the help we got from the ladies with the registration. Both Mrs. Haston and Mrs. Ayers helped out greatly. Also to Mark Clifford on the starting line.

What is going on down in North Carolina? Are they having trouble getting vehicles at pulls? I just saw these post on the Truck Pulling Unleashed website today and thought they were interesting.

Re(5): Danville
Posted on July 21, 2013 at 09:03:56 AM by Observer

There are ,but who else has maximized their profit potential recently like Temple?
He has a pretty loyal following of pullers who not only pull with his circuit, but they pay him to build their pulling vehicles, motors, etc. He has plenty of sponsors for the sleds and the circuit and obviously he has a strong relationship with a lot of promoters because he books a lot of pulls. So while you are right he is not the only one he is one of the most successful in recent history. Love him or hate him he is a schrewed businessman. Other clubs and individuals could take a lot of notes on how to make their clubs or the clubs they pull with better.
From the outside looking in he has done several key things:
Allowed pullers to dictate the classes they wanted to run.
Listened to pullers that they weren't interested in traveling all over the country to enjoy their hobby.
Must be fairly easy to work with for promoters and event holders.(Wether that means less expensive or just personable never know).

Everyone can think whatever they want about him as I said love him or hate him but he has done a pretty good job at building a successful multi faceted business in a tough economy.

It is time for all pulling organizations who want to be around in the future to look at all successful organizations and glean the things that have made them successful and use that information to modify their own organizations. Just remember all of us wether we are casual fans, pullers or crew members. We all have a interest in making the sport stronger and more economically sustainable.
So lets not just use this media outlet to bash pullers or promoters or sled operators. Lets use it to open up a serious and productive conversation about how to better the sport that we all have an interest in.

It has been some time since the last post pull report. I will try to paint a picture if you missed it.

When I was approaching the gate, two ladies met me with the two biggest smiles I have ever seen. Both were so happy and was pleased that I came to the pull and hoped I would enjoy it. You just don't see this any more. After I told her that I was the announcer, they told me where to go and look for the RED shirts who will help me. It did not take me long to figure it out who that would be. The entire cooking and EATING crew was in red. Hats off to the ladies and gents for the fine food.

Started off with the 15,000 farm tractors and Ole Moe finished up in the top spot with Amanda on the seat. I telling you fella's don't mess with the bull.

Three hooks in the 6200 open class. I was shocked that was all that came out. Must have been a pull somewhere else.

The hot farm class having 9 tractors in the class. Lightsout claims another win for the books. Second to last hook and was able to put 4 feet over top Daniel that was second. Doug Layman on the sole JD in the class to be third and Jason on the fourth spot and Bob Martin in the fifth spot. No speeders this week. Swope, Bill B., Wayne B,, Bill Catlett for the rest of the placing.

In the 6400 Pro Stock were 9 pullers also. Greg Griffith with the first hook to run a 306 and keeping it to finish up in the sixth place. Rookie Scottie Neil to place fourth and hold on to the 3rd place in the points.Just 2 points over Randy Brann whick finished third for the night. Good to see the Chief Crew Boss back and a weekend free from the Drifter. Seldon Seen having the seat covered by Bunky Davis with a second place finish to keep Kevin's truck in the top spot in the points. 12 points behind is Haymaker with one of his not so best runs. Gerry drops back in points and was able to hold on to the fifth place finish. The one that surprised me was Ole Goat. Came off the line HI on the rpm;'s to have the only full pull in the class with a 323 and some change. That trucked hooked at the 250 mark and sat down and away it went. Don't count Ole Goat out yet, this class has a 1 drop pull ruling in the points and he could catch up to be in the top three very easy. Just who are the top three is still to early to figure.

In the 7800 LPS was Paul Martin on the 966 IH to place first. Just bearly putting enuff on Josh Sims to be second. Paul Schrock finishing third and still holding on the points lead and Ragan on the Demo Deere was fourth and second in the points. Total of 6 in the class. Rookie Steve Flint having trouble in the fuel delivery to place sixth with Roger Collier on the hot seat of Adam's Ford to place fifth.

7 in the RWB diesels class with Jevon on the top spot for the night. Points runners matt Clary second and points leader John Kuykendall placing fifth to still be in the points lead. Working on the points sheet on this class and I know I have not entered all of the points runners for the class. I am getting this close to have the results posted soon.

I have to say this, there are not many places we go to put on a pull that we are greeted with a hardy handshake and are so pleased we are there to put on a pull. This gives me a great feeling that DMP trys to do every week to ensure the we put on the best show possible. This could not be done by the sled or announcer alone, IT takes pullers that we (DMP) have to do this. I thankyou for what you, the pullers do on and off the track week in a week out. This is why I will go and be part of this group of people anywhere.

A big thanks to the Rice family for such a nice time in their hometown. Thanks to all the ladies & men who prepared such a nice meal and delicious deserts. A special thank you to all the pulling family who stopped to check on us as we sat on the side of 360 (a little tire issue), to all of those who made phone calls to see what they could do or to help find tires and especially to the Balderson family and to Ragan and family who jumped right in their helping Bill and providing us a ride home. Another thanks to EL and Chris Marshall who met us their this morning and helped us get back on the road again.
